The 'Behind the Themes' mini-series is a set of blog posts, posted about once a week, about how we think and what we do.
It was a rainy Thursday afternoon in April 2011, I had just gotten home from work and was getting ready to have a Skype meeting with David and Marc Perel.
They had emailed me the day before to arrange the meeting, I had been a huge fan of Obox work ever since I saw the "Gloss" Theme. I loved the detail in the design and fluid functionality of their themes, so even talking to these guys was a push in the right direction.
As our Skype meeting started I thought to myself "this is a first", as I quickly realized the meeting was a job interview, over Skype. Fortunately, Marc and David liked my work and I started my Obox saga on the 1st of June 2011.
What I do best
To give some background, I'm what people in our industry refer to as a "Hybrid". What is a Hybrid you ask? Well in a nutshell I'm a designer and a developer, I love to design and I love to write code. I've also worked at some really great agencies in Cape Town, such as Quirk eMarketing and Refresh Creative Media, adding a lot of experience in both my design and development expertise.
I've been working at Obox for a little over two months now and I'm really getting into the swing of things, I've been involved with creating Obox's second ever free theme called "Casual", which is now available to the masses. It's a very cool micro blogging theme that uses the popular WooTumblog plugin to divide content into easy to digest content. I think that Micro blogging is going to be a huge force in 2011 as more and more people feel like the content on the internet is saturated and the idea of "less is more" is relevant.
I find working for a startup a very rewarding experience, an almost romantic experience. As it's something everyone with an RSS feed has dreamed about at one time or another. I'm very happy to be part of a small and extremely talented team that pushes the envelope everyday.
